Occupational therapy and cancer pain: A review of pain management and end of life care

L’ergothérapie et la douleur cancéreuse : État des lieux de la prise en charge antalgique et de fin de vie

Résumé

Background: Cancer currently stands as one of the leading causes of death in France, exerting a profound impact on the daily lives of those affected, particularly in terms of the pervasive experience of severe pain. Numerous therapeutic approaches are available to alleviate this pain. Objective : This research project aims to elucidate the role of occupational therapists in supporting cancer patients grappling with pain in the final stages of life. Methodology : This study will employ an examination of professional practices through the administration of a questionnaire. The questionnaire will be distributed to occupational therapists who are currently employed or have previously worked in departments specializing in the care of cancer patients. Additionally, a separate questionnaire will be disseminated to these departments to illuminate prevailing practices and ascertain occupational therapy requirements. Results : The findings from this study reveal a direct correlation between occupational interventions and pain mitigation. Occupational therapists consistently employ specific non-pharmacological therapies to redirect attention away from pain, thereby facilitating its reduction. Furthermore, they draw attention to the parallels and shared objectives between practices focused on pain relief and those employed in end-of-life management. Conclusion : This analysis underscores the pivotal role played by occupational therapists in the management of pain for cancer patients in the terminal stages of life. Further exploration on a broader scale is warranted to expand upon the results obtained. Additionally, it would be worthwhile to extend this study by scrutinizing the quality of end-of-life care.
